Many Russian items are shown in the Russian program

               "From Russia......with Quilts!"

This hour-long program compares Russian quilting, past and present, with American quilting. Marilyn toured Russia for three weeks, staying with quilters and their families. She visited fabric factories, lacquer box factories, museums, Churches, and the Golden Ring towns in rural Russia. Marilyn brings Russian fabrics, quilts, and other items -- and great stories! -- from Russia to share with the audience.  Portions of this program are presented on an LCD projector and computer.

"Potatoes to Patchwork"

An Antique Quilt Trunk Show and Historical Presentation

This hour-long program tells the history of quilting and how various economic situations and wars have affected the quilting art. She relates the changes in quilting with anecdotes from her family and others, beginning with the Revolutionary War, to the Potato Famine in Ireland, through the Civil War, and World Wars I and II up to today. Marilyn brings quilts, fabrics, and other quilt-related items to share with the audience.

"Judging the Way it SHOULD Be"

How to Make YOUR Quilt an Award-Winner

In this hour-long program, Marilyn shares her judging knowledge and experiences.  She began her judging career as a scribe and aide at a small county fair, then for her own guild, and at Pacific International Quilt Festival in Santa Clara, CA. She attended a two-day class in quilt judging sponsored by the National Quilting Association, and began judging quilt shows in California. She has also been involved on the judging floor in various capacities for three National Quilting Association shows. These shows each have three days of judging.

She has judged almost 1,000 quilt shows, ranging from small county fairs and quilt guilds to large fairs, guilds and regional shows, and served as the Counties' Best of Show judge for the California State Fair for three years. She continues to judge the California State Fair in various other quilt categories, and in 2005 (after moving to Rogue River, Oregon) was a judge at the Oregon State Fair.  She was one of two American judges for the 2nd Annual All-Russia National Quilt Show in Ivanovo, Russia.

She now speaks on why judges judge the way they do, what they look for in an award-winning quilt, and how best to prepare your quilt for judging.  She currently serves as Head Quilt Judge for the California State Fair.

Quilting and Cruising -- What a Concept!

In this hour-long program, Marilyn shares her experiences while cruising from South Africa to New York as the on-board Quilt Instructor, designing and making the Inaugural Cruise Quilt for the luxury cruise ship, Crystal Serenity.  Fabrics and artifacts from the ports of call she visited will be shown, and stories of the quilters she met in other countries will be shared.  Portions of this program are presented on an LCD projector and computer.

History of Hawaiian Quilting

See Hawaii through quilts, old and new.  Learn the thought processes and techniques used by the Hawaiian people to make their outstanding works of art.  An all-day workshop to learn the technique of hand-turned applique in the Hawaiian style is also offered.

A Trip Back in Time --

Quilting on a Wagon Train

Sharing experiences of a week on a wagon train in Wyoming with a quilt historian and other quilters.  (Did they REALLY quilt while coming West 150 years ago?  How??)

**   ALL-DAY WORKSHOPS  **

JUDGING AND APPRAISING

How and why are they done, and what do they mean?

This is a full day workshop.  The morning will be spent on judging, the hows and whys of it, discussion of different types of judging, what judges want to see to make a quilt an award-winner, and some hands-on mock judging by attendees.

The afternoon will be spent on appraising, the hows and whys of it, discussion of different types of appraisals, why they are needed and when.  There will also be hands-on fabric dating and discussion of values.  Attendees are encouraged to bring their own quilts for study in this class.  Quilts do NOT need to be antique or vintage to be brought to this class.  Your new quilts have value, too! (Perhaps more than you think.)

        History of Hawaiian Quilting

What it is, what it isn't, and how to do it.

In this all-day workshop, you will learn the history of Hawaiian quilting, see a computerized display of Hawaiian quilts, and learn the techniques for making a traditional Hawaiian quilt.  You will be able to select or design your own motif and begin making a Hawaiian quilt block by the end of this workshop.  No machine required -- just fabric, needle, thread, thimble -- see sponsoring organization for complete supply list.
